In our home, we usually added a component of giving to the day. We would bake and provide house created cookies to elderly neighbors. We'd collect coins in the huge decorated Valentine's Day jug that we had decorated after shortly following Christmas and have enjoyable viewing it grow. On Valentines Day we would count the coins and determine where we would donate the monies. One year it was the local volunteer Fire Department as my son thought because the trucks were red and Santa usually visited the town with the firemen each year, they should receive the gift.
